Yugi and his best friends share a passion for a new game, called Duel Monsters. It’s a card game in which players place different mystical creatures against one another in creative and strategic duels. According to legend, five thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptian pharaohs used a magical game very similar to Duel Monsters which also involved magical ceremonies, used to predict the future and also to decide their own destiny: they called Shadow Games. Since the game was full of so many spells and ferocious creatures, it was not long before the escape out of hand and evil creatures threaten to destroy the world.
Fortunately, a brave Pharaoh stopped this cataclysm. Now, at the time of Yugi and his friends, the game has been revived in the form of playing cards, but keeps itself all the magic of the past. The title means “King of Games” in Japanese.
The name of the main character can also be read as “King Yugi” as double reference to his position as best player and of Pharaoh.
