Rai Com is expanding its portfolio of properties with the acquisition of the management of Edmond and Lucy, the internationally successful preschool series produced by MIAM! Animation and available on-demand on RaiPlay in Italy.
The series, comprising 52 x 12’ episodes and 13 x 3’ educational shorts (Edmond and Lucy +), follows the adventures of Edmond, a young squirrel, and Lucy, a kind-hearted little bear, who grow up together as siblings in a big chestnut tree at the heart of the forest. Around them, a charming cast of secondary characters – from Dad Edouard and Grandma Mima to the mice Polka and Hortense and the bat Mitzi – guides children through discoveries about nature, life, and everyday gestures, all in a light-hearted, playful, and educational tone.
A Sustainable and Innovative Production
Edmond and Lucy is much more than just an animated series. It was created to foster a connection between children, families, and nature, with the support of three experts: agronomist and author Louise Browaeys, anthropologist Gaëlle Bouttier Guérive, and ethnobotanist and naturalist Didier Moreau.
The series was produced using real-time CGI technology with Unity, which enables 3D animation without traditional rendering. This approach drastically reduces CO₂ emissions, with a real-time CGI episode consuming about 2,200 times less energy than a traditionally rendered one—making the series a benchmark for sustainability behind the scenes as well.
International Success and Licensing Opportunities
Based on the bestselling Edmond et ses Amis book series by Astrid Desbordes and Marc Boutavant—translated into 15 languages and published in over 20 countries—the show has enjoyed strong success in France, Germany, and Italy. In Italy, it achieved a 14.4% share among 4–7-year-olds on Rai Yoyo and over 1.5 million views since launch, with similar performance in the 3–9 target group in Germany.
The series has been selected at major international festivals including Annecy Animation Film Festival, Cartoon on the Bay, LA International Children’s Film Festival, and many more, confirming its global appeal. Enriched with sensory podcasts, WebGL games, and seasonal activity books, Edmond and Lucy offers wide-ranging opportunities for licensing, educational products, and merchandise.
With Rai Com now managing the property in Italy, the brand will benefit from a coordinated market strategy—enhancing visibility and opening new avenues for partnerships and collaborations in the kids & family sector.
